So, you’ve decided to build a fence
Here are the tools to get you started. Keep reading to get the full step by step guide.
Tools:
- Post hole digger
- Level
- Drill or nail gun
- String line
- Tape measure
Materials:
- 6ft pickets (pine or cedar)
- 4×4 posts (8ft or 10ft)
- 2×4 rails
- Concrete mix
- Nails or screws
Planning and Measuring
First start by marking your property line. Then measure the total length of it using a tape measure or a measuring wheel. Make sure to measure correctly so you don’t waste materials. Then decide how you want your fence to look, with 2 or 3 rails, or with pine or cedar picket.
You can estimate your material amount and cost using our calculator. It will also visually show you how it will look. Experience it below.
The Actual Building
Now we will walk you through the actual building process:
- Posts: Start by marking your post locations every 8 feet along the fence line. Dig holes about 2 to 3 feet deep, then place your 4×4 posts inside. Use a level to make sure each post is perfectly straight before pouring concrete. It’s a good idea to run a string line across the tops to keep everything aligned. Let the concrete set for at least 24 hours before moving on.
- Rails: Once your posts are set, attach the horizontal 2×4 rails between them. Most fences use two or three rails, with one near the top, one near the bottom, and optionally one in the middle for extra support. Make sure the rails are level and evenly spaced, then secure them tightly to each post using screws or nails.
- Begin installing pickets from one end of the fence, making sure the first one is perfectly straight since it sets the alignment for the rest. Place each picket tightly next to the previous one or with consistent spacing, depending on your design. Use a level as you go to keep everything straight, and secure each picket to the rails with nails or screws for a clean, uniform look.
That’s it! for a basic fence thats all you need. Of course, if you add things like a rot board or a cap it will make it more complex. If you have any questions, you can contact us here.
Tips to Save Money
You can save a lot of money on your fence by choosing the right materials, buying in bulk, and planning your project carefully to avoid waste. Pressure-treated pine is the most budget-friendly option, while cedar offers a more premium look and longer lifespan. Check out our where to buy article for more tips
